Welcome to ReefQuest! My name is Dylan Vecchione and I am the founder of ReefQuest. I first fell in love with coral reefs when I was given the opportunity to dive on the Kaehikili Reef in Maui, Hawaii. I got to witness first-hand the incredible biodiversity that coral reefs contain. Occupying less than 1% of the world’s oceans, coral reefs host 25% of all marine life. Over the years, returning to that reef I noticed negative changes on the reef due to environmental stresses. I was dismayed to learn that coral reefs are dying all over the world. If that were to happen it would be an ecological catastrophe as reefs’ ecosystems are deeply linked to the health of the rest of the ocean.
I decided to do something about it! I founded ReefQuest to foster marine environmental stewardship in kids everywhere and make a positive impact on coral reefs and other fragile marine environments.
ReefQuest uses citizen science projects to help collect data that can support scientific research. In so doing we also teach science to kids in a whole new way: we make them protagonists to the process of discovery.
ReefQuest is pioneering new ways to use the internet to enable kids to become citizen scientists. Our virtual reef is the first of its kind in the world and allows anyone to engage into virtual dives on real survey sites, and conduct monitoring and surveys that are integrated with real scientific efforts at those sites. We are expanding this effort to link our virtual reef to a middle and high school curriculum, available to all schools. And our web site is a portal that links you to schools, resources, experts, scientists and other kids all motivated by the same desire to make a difference for marine habitats. Try the interactive timeline below to see all Virtual Reefs under development and their evolution over time.
Dylan Vecchione will speak of the importance of citizen science and of taking action in the context of Kahekili Reef conservation efforts.
