Hanauma Bay, Oahu, Hawaii is our next Virtual Reef!

We are very pleased to report that the students and teachers of the Academy of the Pacific, in Honolulu,  led by Science professor Mary Costello are getting ready to complete the first Virtual Reef on Oahu, none other that Hanauma Bay! This location is the site of Hawaii's oldest Marine Protected Area, created in the '60s. We are really excited to begin monitoring coral health using the Virtual Reef protocols and virtual survey techniques. To help the students complete the project ReefQuest's founder and Virtual Reef creator Dylan Vecchione will join the Academy of the Pacific for a day of imaging on July 27th at the bay. We will conduct an under-water photography refresher class and lead students, teachers and volunteers underwater. Stay tuned for photos and results.

We hope to learn about the reef and teach other people our learnings. And we hope to come back with something nobody else has seen before.

This excursion was a lot of fun.  We still got work done, too.  I'm looking forward for our next excursion to studying the reef.  I hope that our research can assist those people who don't have the pleasure to visit and study Hawaii's beaches.

Dear Academy of the Pacific team: I am happy to report that we just received back from Microsoft the processed 3D images from our summer survey at Hanauma. Dylan and I will work on posting the Hanauma virtual reef shortly so you can all begin using it for virtual surveys online.

I'm also excited to go out to Hanauma Bay and study the reef. It's one thing learning about reefs in class but getting out into the water is a whole different experience!
