(Repost from Wes Maui Watershed News) CORAL will hold a water reuse readiness workshop on Friday, April 5th, from 9 am to 2 pm. The workshop will start with a tour of the Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility, in partnership with the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association’s Engineers Advisory Council. Steve Parabicoli, Maui County Wastewater Operations Program Superintendent, will conduct the tour and provide an update on the facility’s current and future plans for upgrades. After the tour we will head to the Honua Kai Resort & Spa, where the rest of the workshop will take place, with lunch generously provided by the resort.
In addition to the tour of the LWTF, the agenda will focus on the questions and answers involved in the technical aspects of transitioning your property to using reclaimed water. Topics include irrigation and landscaping and the permitting process, and we will hear from the team at the Honua Kai about their experiences in using R1 water. We will be taking inventory of properties’ needs and experience, in order to develop appropriate and useful tools and resources for the West Maui accommodations sector as a whole. Another area we will explore is the impact of wastewater on Maui’s reefs, what it potentially could mean for tourism, and how the issue can be communicated to colleagues and visitors. We will also introduce and discuss our water use survey (see below). Finally, Tova Callender, Watershed and Coastal Management Coordinator working with theWest Maui Ridge to Reef effort on Maui, will update everyone on the multifaceted watershed management planning effort, and opportunities for you to play a role.
Our main target audience for this workshop is the management and engineering departments of the resorts and condos next in line to receive reclaimed water, after key improvements to the Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility are implemented. If you don’t know who you are, we’re talking Ka’anapali Villas, the Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort, International Colony Club, Outrigger Maui Eldorado; later in line (but hopefully in the next several years as well!) are the Hyatt Regency, Ka’anapali Ali’i, Ka’anapali Beach Hotel, Maui Marriott, the Westin Maui, The Whaler, Ka’anapali Royal, the Sheraton, Papakea, Ka’anapali Shores, Ka’anapali Beach Vacation Resort, Maui Kai, and the Mahana.
Registration is limited and an RSVP is required – Please RSVP to Liz Foote, to attend this workshop – call (808) 669-9062 or (808) 283-1631, or email me at Lfoote@coral.org.
We want to send out a big MAHALO to the Honua Kai Resort & Spa, for hosting this workshop and providing lunch, to Steve Parabicoli, for the tour of the Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility, and to the West Maui Ridge to Reef Initiative, Maui Hotel & Lodging Association, and Ka’anapali Operations Association for their support and participation.
